Hao Wu

Director | Producer | Camera | Editor

Originally trained as a molecular biologist, Hao Wu traveled to the Internet world before focusing on filmmaking and writing. He directed and produced Beijing or Bust, his first feature documentary that was shown on PBS. His second feature documentary, The Road to Fame, received funding from The Ford Foundation JustFilms and Center for Asian American Media, and was co-produced by BBC, VPRO, CNEX and DR. He also produced Nowhere to Call Home, which The New York Times called “Inspiring Dialogue, Not Dissent, in China.”

In the Internet world, Wu worked in management positions in Silicon Valley and with Alibaba and Yahoo in China. From 2008-2011, he was the China Country Manager for TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel website.

Wu holds a Master of Science degree from Brandeis University, an MBA degree with High Distinction from the University of Michigan Ross School of Business. He is currently a fellow at the New America Foundation. His writing has appeared on Time.com, Slate.com, Marketplace Radio, Strait Times and China Daily.

Changying Liu

Producer

Changying Liu has worked as reporter, editor, writer, director, host, producer and senior producer with China Central Television English Service (CCTV-News). CCTV is the China's largest broadcaster and CCTV-News is the only English-news channel in the country. She currently heads the foreign desk at CCTV News.

During her tenure at CCTV, she co-founded two popular programs: World Wide Watch (a 30-minute news bulletin covering world news and analysis) and Travelogue (a 30-minute weekly travel show that features China's popular destinations). She holds a Masters' Degree in Broadcast Journalism from New York University.

She has gained ample experience in filming in China and in the subtle understanding of the Chinese society and the people. In January 2007, after obtaining a Masters' Degree in Broadcast Journalism from New York University in United States, she returned to China. She is currently producing a news program for CCTV-9 focusing on global events..

Jean Tsien, A.C.E.

Jean Tsien has been working in the field of documentary for 30 years. Her work has been honored with numerous awards and accolades, including: Something Within Me (Filmmaker’s Trophy, Special Jury Award, and Audience Award at the 1993 Sundance Film Festival); A Hymn For Alvin Ailey (1999 Primetime Emmy Award); Scottsboro: An American Tragedy (2001 Academy Award-nominee for Best Documentary Feature); Dixie Chicks: Shut Up & Sing (2006 Toronto International Film Festival); Please Vote For Me (2007 Silver Docs Sterling Award); The Biggest Chinese Restaurant in the World (2008 Toronto International Film Festival); A Place At The Table (2012 Sundance Film Festival); and Rafea: Solar Mama (2012 Toronto International Film Festival).

Jean serves as an editing advisor for the Sundance Institute Story/Edit Lab. She was a 10-year board member for CAAM, a non-profit organization promoting Asian American media. She is currently on the board of ITVS

Kai P. Yang

Camera

Kai P. Yang has worked on independent film and TV productions for Al Jazeera, Italian TV, German TV and Dutch TV. He holds film degrees from New York University and the Beijing Film Academy.
